Surgical Technology Degree Earns Programmatic Accreditation

Program Found in Compliance with Nationally Established Standards

The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) awarded accreditation to the Surgical Technology program at SOWELA Technical Community College Morgan Smith Site in Jennings, LA.

A recent peer review conducted by the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA) and CAAHEP’s Board of Directors recognizes the program’s substantial compliance with the nationally established standards.

Dr. Wendi Palermo, School of Nursing & Allied Health Dean, said, “I am pleased our first cohort of Surgical Technology students completed the program CAAHEP accredited. This feat could not have been achieved without the hard work and dedication of the Program Director, Mrs. Amy Broussard. Her leadership in this endeavor was invaluable. We welcome anyone interested in our Surgical Technology program to contact the School of Nursing and Allied Health.”

The Surgical Technology program is designed to train practitioners as Surgical Technologists to meet the needs of local healthcare partners. Students who successfully complete the program are able to make clinical judgments based on current standards and practices within the profession. They perform medical calculations before and during surgical procedures and serve as a member of the surgical team.
