(Lake Charles, Louisiana – April 13, 2022)
Summer and Fall 2022 registration is now open for interested students who want to enroll at SOWELA for all technical and academic programs and at all four of the regional community college’s locations in Southwest Louisiana.
SOWELA is currently offering online, hybrid and in-person options dependent on course availability and requirements. SOWELA’s main campus is in Lake Charles with satellite sites in Jennings, Oakdale and the recently acquired Lamar Salter Campus in Leesville (pending approval by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges).
Summer semester courses begin Tuesday, May 31. Fall semester courses get underway on Monday, August 15. Students can apply here.
SOWELA recently announced an anonymous $200,000 donation that will be used to fund student scholarships in 2022 for those who qualify. The “SOWELA Student Success Scholarship” will be awarded based on merit and need to students who have earned a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 from SOWELA, if currently enrolled, or a 2.5 GPA from high school if enrolling at SOWELA for the first time. All new and current SOWELA students are encouraged to complete a scholarship application on our Scholarships page.
In addition, beginning in July 2022, eligible SOWELA students can take advantage of Louisiana’s “M.J. Foster Promise Program,” a financial aid award given on a first-come, first-served basis. Funds from the program may be used by students over a three-year period to cover their tuition and fees. Qualifying students are eligible for a maximum of $3,200 per award year with a lifetime maximum benefit of $6,400. Students must be 21 years or older to qualify.
SOWELA offers more than 30 technical and academic programs including Practical Nursing, Machine Tool Technology, Culinary Arts, Drafting and Design Technology, Surgical Technology, Accounting Technology and Forest Technology.
SOWELA was recently named WalletHub’s (opens new window) #1 community college in Louisiana for the fourth straight year and nationally recognized as a “Great College to Work For” by the Great Colleges to Work For program. SOWELA is also ranked #36 on the “Top 100 Community Colleges in America” by Stacker.
