My name is Jennifer Powers, and I am the Academic Advisor for the School of Arts and Sciences. I am a born and raised Georgia peach who moved to Lake Charles in 2016. Prior to starting at SOWELA, I worked in Disability Services at the University of North Georgia and as an Academic Advisor at Lamar State College in Orange, Texas. I love being an Academic Advisor because I get to learn about our students’ lives and assist them as they work toward their collegiate goals.

My name is Megan Fabian, and I am the Academic Advisor for both the School of Business and Applied Technology and the School of Transportation and Applied Technology. I am a New Orleans native that moved to Lake Charles in 2017. I obtained my Bachelor’s in Communication Studies at Louisiana State University and my Master’s in Rehabilitation Counseling at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. I started my journey, at SOWLEA, as an Enrollment Specialist. As an Academic Advisor, I love helping students become more confident of themselves, identify their academic goals, and learn the steps needed to obtain those goals.

My name is Evan Staves, and I am the Academic Advisor for the School of Industrial Technology. I’m from Lake Charles, LA. I received my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from McNeese State University. I have 6 years of experience in higher education. I’ve worked in areas such as the Registrar’s Office, Veteran’s Affairs, & Testing. Why I like working with students at SOWELA: As an academic advisor, you get to meet all kinds of people. No two students are alike. Everyone you come in contact with has their own story, aspirations, & goals. My job allows me to listen first, and then come up with the best solution to get them to their ultimate destination.

My name is Maegan Lewis, and I am the Academic Advisor for the School of Nursing and Allied Health. I’m from Lake Charles, LA, by way of Austin, TX. I obtained two bachelor’s degree from Stephen F. Austin State University, and I’m currently working on my Master’s Degree at Louisiana State University. I’ve worked in higher education the past few years helping students with admissions, registration, scholarships, financial aid and first year students with academic advising. Working with students at SOWELA is a great experience. I have the pleasure everyday helping students from all backgrounds whether this is their first year attending college, they’re a transfer student, or they’re the first person in their family to attend college.

My Name is Venus DeJean, and I am an Academic Advisor and Retention Coordinator. I’m from Lake Charles, LA. I received my Bachelor’s degree from McNeese State University. I’ve worked in high education for the past 5 years helping student as an Enrollment Specialist and Financial Aid Counselor. Working with students at SOWELA I have the privilege to witness who students are at the start of their journey and how they come to develop into their future self. My name is Danielle Schofield, and I am a Student Success Coordinator. I am originally from Victorville, CA, but currently live in Lake Charles, LA. I am a McNeese graduate. I have a Bachelor’s in Spanish Liberal Arts, and a Master’s in Instructional Technology. I have been with SOWELA since 2016. Prior to working at SOWELA I was an advisor for international students at Lamar University. I enjoy working at SOWELA because I like to see students learn and grow. It’s more than a job it is a chance to help people become who they want to be.

My name is Dedria Walton, and I am the Lead Student Success Coordinator. I’m from DeQuincy, LA. I obtained a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications/ Minor in Speech from McNeese State University. I have twenty plus years of experience in student success and student life initiatives, multicultural programs, leadership programs, and student engagement programs. This also includes Career college and state college first year experience programs and academic advising. SOWELA students are the most engaging, full of personality, and have a strong desire to be the best that they can be. It is a privilege and an honor every day to play a role in assisting our students from beginning of their journey, to the end result here at SOWELA.

My name is Randall (Randy) Guidry, and I am a Student Success Coordinator. I’m from Sulphur, LA. I obtained an Associate degree in Drafting & Design from SOWELA. I am a former Instructor (SOWELA), past petro/chemical industry work experience, Engineering work-related field, worked in the maritime transportation field, USCGAUX (Retired). The enjoyment and the ability to assist whether potential or continuing students achieve their educational goals. One of the greatest joys and excitements for me is attending the graduation ceremony and observing students receive their accomplished and earned award!

I received a Bachelor’s degree from University of Louisiana at Monroe, and spent years working in higher education at McNeese State University. My career at SOWELA began as a Student Services Generalist where I tutored in Math, English, Chemistry, and more. I enjoy working with students at SOWELA because I love seeing students take on new challenges and achieve their goals.
