Attendees to Learn about Scholarship Opportunities, Meet Faculty and Register for the Program

Lake Charles, Louisiana – July 2, 2021

SOWELA Technical Community College will host a Culinary Arts Informational Session on Tuesday, July 13, 2021, at 10 a.m. on the Main Campus in the Sycamore Student Center. The event provides prospective Culinary Arts students with the opportunity to meet faculty and staff, learn about the program, explore financial aid and scholarship opportunities, apply and more.

To register for the informational session, visit our Culinary Arts page. The informational session is free and open to the public. For questions, please contact Culinary Arts Program Coordinator Chef Jerry Sonnier at jerry.sonnier@sowela.edu.

The Culinary Arts program prepares students to work in service, production, and baking areas of the food service industry. Program content includes American Culinary Federation guidelines for approved chef training, accreditation, and National Restaurant Association Pro Management Certification. Students also learn the business side of Culinary Arts such as managing a budget and more.

SOWELA’s Culinary Arts program is also available 100% online and is the oldest online Culinary Arts associate of applied science degree program in the U.S.

In 2019, SOWELA broke ground on its new $10.2 million state-of-the-art Culinary, Gaming and Hospitality Building at its Lake Charles Campus. The 28,000 square-feet building will provide education and training for students seeking jobs and careers in Louisiana’s hospitality industry. Once constructed, the building will include new culinary training facilities and the campus’ first-ever gaming and hospitality training environments. Construction of the building is scheduled to be completed in March 2022.

SOWELA also recently announced a $60,000 donation from Mr. and Mrs. Donna Richard to name the facility’s lobby in memory of Mr. Brent Lumpkin for promoting the “Quality of Life” and the spirit of tourism in Southwest Louisiana and fund the William Brent Lumpkin Culinary Arts Endowed Scholarship.
