Technical Courses Requiring Hands-on Instruction Are Paused
LAKE CHARLES, LOUISIANA – March 20, 2020
Due to increasing health concerns related to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, SOWELA Technical Community College is pausing all onsite instruction effective immediately at the Lake Charles, Jennings, and Oakdale locations. The College’s top priority continues to be the well-being of students, faculty, and staff. Administrators are working with the Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS) to monitor the situation daily to determine when to safely resume onsite instruction.
SOWELA will resume classes on Monday, March 23, through an online instructional method only for courses that can be delivered in such format. Technical courses requiring hands-on instruction will pause and resume once it is safe to provide them in a face-to-face modality. A listing of courses not converting to an online format is available at www.sowela.edu/paused-classes (PDF). Students can visit Canvas (opens new window) for more information or contact their instructor directly with questions.
We understand that some students have limited access to technology, and we will do our best to continue working with students through alternate means to serve them on a case by case basis. However, because of the fluidity of this crisis and our unified efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19, instructional labs on all campuses will not be available (for use by students) until it is safe to do so.
