(Lake Charles, Louisiana) – Officials from SOWELA Technical Community College announced today a donation from Northrop Grumman. The donation will fund scholarships for students enrolled in SOWELA’s popular programs of Aviation Maintenance Technology, Process Technology, Industrial Instrumentation Technology, Industrial Electrician and Machine Tool Technology.

The scholarships will help boost access to students in Southwest Louisiana seeking career opportunities in technical industries that are quickly growing in Louisiana and across the United States. All scholarships will be offered in the Spring, Summer and Fall 2021 semesters.

“The great success SOWELA has experienced in the last several years is due in part to the great partnerships the College has created with the business and industries in the area. Northrop Grumman is a perfect example of how higher education and industry can work together to create training programs that build the workforce needed to strengthen the regional economy,” said SOWELA Chancellor Dr. Neil Aspinwall. “Northrop Grumman’s financial investment in SOWELA helps the College provide the resources our faculty, staff and students need to keep our instructional programs viable and operational during a time when the region has suffered devastating storm damage while dealing with the challenges of the pandemic.”

SOWELA will accept and manage applicants for the scholarships through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). SOWELA’s Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship will review undergraduate applicants that have completed at least one semester, maintain a GPA of 2.5 and qualify for financial need. All students are encouraged to submit a SOWELA scholarship application by the April 1 priority deadline. Students can apply online at www.sowela.edu/scholarships

“Northrop Grumman is proud to support the diverse needs of the communities where we live and work,” said Eric Price, director, Aircraft Maintenance and Fabrication Center, Northrop Grumman. “Helping to make a critical technology skills education at SOWELA achievable for more students will contribute to the future workforce in our region.”

Northrop Grumman’s growing Aircraft Maintenance and Fabrication Center, located in Lake Charles, Louisiana, is home to 700 professionals who have performed over 15 million hours of direct depot maintenance work on numerous aircraft in support of customers across the globe.
