College Celebrates Enrollment Increase with Record-Breaker Bash
Lake Charles, Louisiana – October 1, 2025
SOWELA Technical Community College’s faculty and staff celebrated the College’s historic enrollment growth today with a Record-Breaker Bash. Employees took a moment to acknowledge their hard work and enjoyed gumbo from SOWELA’s Takeoff Café. This semester SOWELA saw enrollment reach a 20% year-over-year increase. The achievement marks the first time in the College’s 87-year history that enrollment exceeded 4,500 students.
In recognition of this milestone, Lake Charles Mayor Marshall Simien officially proclaimed today as ‘SOWELA’s Record-Breaking Enrollment Day.’
“This enrollment increase is a milestone for SOWELA. The faculty and staff have worked tirelessly to make the College an outstanding institution of higher education whose core mission is workforce development,” said SOWELA Chancellor Dr. Neil Aspinwall. “SOWELA turns 87 years old this year, and we have become a critical part of the economic engine that drives the economy of Southwest Louisiana by providing the means for students to gain the skills and training they need to gain access to high-skilled, high-demand and high-wage occupations.”
SOWELA’s programs experiencing the highest growth include Criminal Justice at 47.06%, Aviation Maintenance at 38.64%, Vehicle Maintenance and Repair at 35.14% and Welding at 29.89%.
SOWELA attributes the enrollment increase in these programs to an emphasis on meeting industry workforce needs and the high-wage, high-demand jobs available to SOWELA graduates.
“Double-digit enrollment increases are uncommon in an era when many higher education institutions are losing enrollment or growth is at a standstill,” said Aspinwall. “Our tremendous growth legitimizes our value as a college and substantiates the importance our customers and students place on the training programs and services we provide to the Southwest Louisiana region. The 5,000-enrollment mark is within our reach!”
Additional reasons for the uptick include a student-first focus and strong student support services. The College is also experiencing growth again in the number of credit hours SOWELA students take, at 40,613, up from 35,502.
For the sixth year in a row, SOWELA was named the #1 community college in Louisiana by WalletHub based on cost and financing and education and career outcomes.
