LAKE CHARLES, LOUISIANA – October 23, 2018
SOWELA Technical Community College and Jacobs Engineering Group recently announced that the first Jacobs JumpStart Program graduation will take place on Wednesday, October 24, 2018, at SOWELA’s Regional Training Center Auditorium from 6-8 p.m. The Jacobs JumpStart Program provides pre-hire training opportunities for people in close proximity to Jacobs’ jobsites and prepares them for employment in Jacobs’ workforce. The program provides 45-hours of free training to prepare participants to enter the world of industrial construction and maintenance.
JumpStart covers basic construction math, construction drawings, and safety awareness. Trainees also learn the basics of how to use hand tools, power tools, and more. Once an individual completes the training, including performance based (hands-on) competency tests, they are hired by Jacobs, provided all pre-employment conditions are met. Once hired, Jacobs provides a clear pathway for career advancement through training as they “earn while they learn.”
The training was held on the SOWELA Main Campus and has resulted in 10 students who will graduate and be work ready for Jacobs at the WR Grace project site. SOWELA’s Office of Workforce Solutions partners often with programs like Jacobs JumpStart in an effort to provide the skilled workforce necessary to fill employment gaps due to rapid regional industry expansion.
