SOWELA Offering Free Fiber Optics Training in Partnership with Venture Global

Calcasieu and Cameron Parish Residents Must Attend Informational Sessions to Secure Their Spots

Lake Charles, Louisiana – Tuesday, January 7

In partnership with SOWELA Technical Community College, Venture Global is offering Calcasieu and Cameron Parish residents 18 years or older free Fiber Optics Technician training for the next cohort of its “Will to Skill” program. Interested individuals must attend the informational session in their parish to secure their training spot.

For Cameron Parish residents, a Fiber Optics Training Informational Session will take place on Monday, January 13, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Grand Lake Elementary School Cafeteria, 1025 Hwy. 384, Grand Lake, LA 70607. For Calcasieu Parish residents, the informational session will take place on Tuesday, January 14, from 6-7:30 p.m. at SOWELA’s Regional Training Center Auditorium, 3749 Senator J. Bennett Johnston Ave., Lake Charles, LA 70615.

Training is Monday, February 24, through Friday, February 28, with classes meeting from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at SOWELA’s Main Campus in Lake Charles, LA.

Eligible participants can earn up to three certifications during the weeklong program. Training includes Fiber Optics Technician (CFOT), Fiber Optics Specialist in Testing and Maintenance (CFOS/T) and Fiber Optics Specialist in Splicing (CFOS/S).

The Fiber Optics Technician course is a one-day training designed for anyone interested in becoming a Certified Fiber Optics Technician. It combines theory and hands-on activities to prepare students for the technician exam. The Fiber Optics Specialist course offers advanced training for testing and maintaining fiber optics networks and includes fiber optics testing standards. In the Fiber Optics Specialist in Splicing course, students learn about high-performance splicing and the points necessary to achieve effective splices. Training includes fusion and mechanical splicing of either single or multi-mode fiber optics cables.
