Spring 2025 Practical Nursing Class Has Highest Retention Rate in History of Program
Lake Charles, Louisiana – June 24, 2025
SOWELA Oakdale’s Spring 2025 Practical Nursing class had the highest retention rate of any cohort in its program at 89.47%. The program’s high retention is attributed to SOWELA’s emphasis on a student-first focus, strong student support services and small class sizes for more holistic instruction.
“The growth, retention and graduation rates in SOWELA Oakdale’s Practical Nursing program have been outstanding,” said School of Nursing and Allied Health Dean Kristine Stout. “This success reflects a powerful collaboration between our supportive community, dedicated healthcare partners and the unwavering commitment of our faculty and staff. From spreading awareness about the program to guiding students every step of the way, everyone plays a vital role. Most importantly, it speaks to the determination and resilience of our students, who work tirelessly toward their goal of becoming nurses. Becoming a Practical Nurse is not easy—it takes perseverance and strong support systems. These numbers are proof of that.”
SOWELA’s Practical Nursing program prepares students to become Licensed Practical Nurses. It consists of both classroom instruction and supervised clinicals in accredited hospitals, nursing homes and other health care agencies.
“I am so proud of this class. I have watched them push through tough days and never give up,” said SOWELA Oakdale Practical Nursing Program Coordinator Gary Soileau. “They have worked hard, sacrificed a lot and earned every bit of this accomplishment. Seeing them finish what they started feels like watching your own children graduate.”
Spots are still available to begin the SOWELA Oakdale Practical Nursing program this fall. The next orientation for this site’s program is Wednesday, July 2.
