New lab technology prepares students for high-wage careers in LNG and petrochemical industries
LAKE CHARLES, LOUISIANA — SOWELA Technical Community College has enhanced its industrial training capabilities with a $451,477 process simulator, equipping students with advanced, hands-on experience aligned with the rapidly expanding liquefied natural gas (LNG) and petrochemical industries.
The simulator replicates a real-world process unit commonly found in industrial facilities, allowing students to develop critical troubleshooting and operational skills in a controlled environment. An anonymous donor provided $450,000 for the simulator.
“The process simulator gives students access to the latest industry technology while strengthening their problem-solving abilities,” said John Vaussine, SOWELA instrumentation and electrical instructor. “It ensures our students are prepared for where the industry is headed.”
The upgraded system includes Bluetooth-enabled controls, reverse osmosis water filtration, product recirculation, enhanced analytics for testing and measurement, and advanced cybersecurity features that support cross-disciplinary training.
The project originated from professional development Vaussine completed through a SOWELA Foundation professorship award funded by the Oliver “Rick” and Donna G. Richard III Endowment. Following the training, he collaborated with industrial technology faculty to design enhancements to the lab space, ensuring instruction remains aligned with current industry standards.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to expand my knowledge through this training,” Vaussine said. “Bringing those insights back to the classroom to improve student outcomes is both exciting and rewarding.”
Additional training focused on safety instrumented systems and plant cybersecurity, which are key competencies in modern industrial operations.
The upgraded lab is part of SOWELA’s School of Industrial Technology, which includes programs in chemical laboratory technology, industrial instrumentation, industrial electrical and process technology. These programs prepare students for high-demand, high-wage careers across Southwest Louisiana and beyond.
The Louisiana Board of Regents recognizes SOWELA as an Industrial, Process and Liquefied Natural Gas Technology Center for Workforce Excellence. The process simulator lab ensures continued academic excellence in this field.
