SOWELA Digital Arts and Communication Program Hosts First Art Show in Five Years

Over 50 pieces of industry-selected artwork will be on display March 8

(Lake Charles, Louisiana – Monday, March 4)

SOWELA Technical Community College will hold its first Student Art Show after a five-year hiatus because of the pandemic and Hurricanes Laura and Delta. The event is Friday, March 8, at 6 p.m. at SOWELA’s Art and Humanities Building, 2000 Merganser St., Lake Charles, LA 70615. Over 50 pieces of original artwork produced by 30 students will be on display.

“We’re thrilled to announce the return of our Student Art Show,” said Digital Arts and Communications Instructor Darrell Buck. “This beloved tradition has been a part of SOWELA for over 30 years, and this year marks a fresh start for the art show. We couldn’t be prouder of the exceptional work our students have produced and can’t wait for everyone to see the incredible talent on display. Join us for an unforgettable showcase of creativity and dedication.”

Digital Arts and Communication students submitted artwork to a panel of industry experts who selected pieces for the show. Mediums featured include photography and digital art focusing on advertising, including print ads, posters, book covers, brochures and more. Documentary-style videos and audio commercials will give attendees diverse visual and auditory creations that highlight the intersection of art and advertising.

The first art show to feature the new Media Production Concentration will include student video projects and audio commercials. The show is free and open to the public. The exhibit will be available through the end of the Spring 2024 semester.

SOWELA’s Digital Arts and Communication program prepares students for employment and advancement within digital media. Two concentrations are available, including Graphic Design and Media Production. Students learn to use industry-standard software, such as the Adobe Creative Cloud. The program is at the College’s Main Campus in Lake Charles, LA.
