SOWELA Culinary Arts Students Explore International Cuisine in Canada

Lake Charles, Louisiana – July 20, 2018

A group of 10 SOWELA Culinary Arts students attended a Culinary International Odyssey Externship in Canada June 24 – 30, 2018. Students visited international restaurants in Toronto; researched locally sourced ingredients in city markets and Chinatown; toured bakeries, specialty shops, and food stores; explored two wineries in Niagara Falls; and attended cooking classes at George Brown College.

To participate, students had to apply and complete an essay. The program provided students with a hands-on learning experience in the food service industry and gave students the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge of culinary arts and demonstrate practical skills in international meal production.

“This is the second SOWELA-organized study abroad program, a great deal of planning went into this trip. We wanted to ensure that the students received a memorable educational experience. Toronto, Canada was selected because of its diverse culture which allowed for many types of cuisines in one location. George Brown College in Toronto was chosen as a SOWELA partner based on their diverse international cooking classes,” said Culinary Arts Program Coordinator Chef Jerry Sonnier.
