SOWELA Accounting Student Recognized with Top Honors at Phi Beta Lambda National Leadership Conference in San Antonio

LAKE CHARLES, LOUISIANA – July 18, 2019

Joshua Kiser, an Accounting Technology student at SOWELA Technical Community College, received national recognition at the Future Business Leaders of America – Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL) Awards of Excellence Program on June 27. Kiser competed in Accounting Principles and brought home 10th place. This event provides recognition for PBL members who demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of accounting and who give evidence of their knowledge in solving practical accounting problems.

“It takes a lot of hard work to get on stage at the PBL National Leadership Conference. When our students are competing with college and university students from all over the United States, they have to put in a lot of extra studying to earn a place on stage. Our Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) chapter at SOWELA is very proud of Josh. He’s a great student who will do well in the accounting profession,” said Dr. Marie Coleman, SOWELA’s PBL Adviser and Assistant Professor in SOWELA’s School of Business and Applied Technology.

More than 2,000 of America’s best and brightest college students traveled to Texas as they competed for the opportunity to win more than $114,000 in cash awards.

The PBL National Leadership Conference was held on June 24–27 in San Antonio. Participants from across the United States attended this exciting conference to enhance their business skills, expand their networks, and participate in 60 business and business-related competitive events.

The award was part of a competitive national program sponsored by FBLA-PBL that recognizes and rewards excellence in a broad range of business and career-related areas. For many students, the competitive events are the capstone activity of their academic careers. In addition to competitions, students immersed themselves in interactive workshops, visited an information-packed exhibit hall, and heard from motivational keynotes on a broad range of business topics.
