Free Fiber Optics Training

In partnership with Venture Global LNG, SOWELA is offering a free Fiber Optics training class to Calcasieu and Cameron parish residents. The five-day class starts Monday, December 11, and meets from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Successful completers earn three certifications and will be certified to work as Fiber Optics Technicians. Spots are limited.

The free training includes the following certifications and hands-on learning:

  • Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT): This course introduces students to industry standards governing FTTD (Fiber To The Desk), FTTH (Fiber To The Home), and Distribution Cabling. Students will learn how to identify fiber types, recognize various connectors used in fiber installation, and install, terminate, splice, and properly test installed fiber cable to existing standards.
  • Certified Fiber Optics Specialist in Testing and Maintenance (CFOS/T): Training explains the variety of testing standards, equipment and technological approaches used in fiber network testing and splicing and how to choose among them.
  • Certified Fiber Optics Specialist in Splicing (CFOS/S): Students learn mechanical and fusion splices and how to correctly and efficiently install spliced fibers into splice trays and enclosures.

Normally, these certifications cost a total of $2,835.

Class will be held at SOWELA's Main Campus in Lake Charles, LA. Training includes both theory and 85% hands-on activities to prepare students to take the certification exams sanctioned by the Fiber Optics Association.

According to Salary.com, the average salary for a Fiber Optics Technician in Louisiana is about $60,000 or more with experience. With multiple companies expanding their fiber footprint in Southwest Louisiana, individuals with Fiber Optics certifications are in-demand in the current job market.
