Is the program completely online?
The online courses offered in Culinary Arts are completely online. Students do not need to come to campus to take the culinary art online courses.
How am I graded based on what I cook and prepare for classes?
The SOWELA Culinary Arts department has developed a grading rubric for prepared dishes. Students will also be required to take pictures and/or videos of their preparation, cooking, and final dish. The SOWELA Culinary Arts faculty will work with students to help them develop flavor profiles through established recipes, then the students will hone the craft as they learn to tweak recipes.
Is Culinary Arts online accredited at SOWELA?
SOWELA Technical Community College maintains the highest accreditation for the Technical diploma and Associate of Applied Science degree on-ground culinary programs through the American Culinary Federation (ACF). ACF does not have the ability to accredit culinary programs online at this point. Our online Culinary Arts degree is in the process of earning “Quality Program” status through American Culinary Federation Education Foundation (ACFEF). It will be the first online Culinary Arts program to achieve Quality Program status through ACFEF.
SOWELA Technical Community College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates. Contact the Commission on Colleges at 1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097 or call 404-679-4500 for questions about the accreditation of SOWELA Technical Community College.
How long will it take to complete the culinary program?
This is tricky to answer, because it depends on what courses a student comes in with and how many courses they plan to take each semester. Typically, students can expect to complete the Associates degree online in two years.
