Meet faculty, learn about placement testing, and find out how adult education works at SOWELA. Guests will also learn about scholarship opportunities for college credits.

Ready to earn your high school equivalency diploma but need help with math, reading or writing? SOWELA can help!
We offer adult education courses that prepare students to take the High School Equivalency Test or HiSET to earn a state-issued high school equivalency diploma. The program covers five core areas covered on the test:
- Language Arts – Reading
- Language Arts – Writing
- Math
- Science
- Social Studies
Classes are offered at all SOWELA locations, which include Lake Charles, Jennings, Leesville and Oakdale, LA. Students can enroll year-round, and courses are tuition-free, allowing students to enroll and attend classes at no cost. Call for more information:
WorkReadyU
As part of SOWELA's Adult Education classes, students can participate in the College's WorkReadyU program. WorkReadyU is for adult learners who want to also transition to college with the goal of finding a job and earning a family-sustaining wage.
Services include:
- Secondary credential preparation
- Basic skills remediation
- Workforce preparation
- Integrated education and training
Scholarships
Participating in WorkReadyU gives students the benefit of these scholarship opportunities:
- Louisiana HSE Test Scholarship – covers the cost of the HiSET exam or subtests of the HISET exam.
- Adult Career Pathways Scholarship – awarded to individuals without a high school diploma or equivalency who wish to enroll in SOWELA. Eligible students take college courses and HiSET prep courses at the same time and receive credit for both.
- Next Steps Scholarship – provides financial assistance to WorkReadyU and adult education graduates who enroll in a Louisiana Community and Technology College System college, including SOWELA.
