Higher Education a Family Affair in the Jack Household

SOWELA Recognizes Two Generations Pursuing Their Career Dreams During Community College Week

(Lake Charles, Louisiana – March 17, 2022)

Education has always been a core value in the Jack family, and from the time they were young, Nathan Jack encouraged his children to pursue higher education. Little did he know, however, that he and his sons, Nathan Jamar Jack and Mikail Jack, would all learn together at SOWELA Technical Community College.

“I was a CDL driver for 12 years and had health issues that prevented me from passing the CDL physical for an extended time,” said Nathan Jack. “My son, Nathan Jamar, encouraged me to go back to school and I feel I now have a second chance at life.”

The senior Jack and his son Mikail are currently enrolled in the Welding program at SOWELA’s Oakdale site while his son Nathan Jamar attends SOWELA’s Main Campus in Lake Charles, LA as a Drafting and Design Technology student. All three plan to graduate in December 2022.

“I enjoy going to welding class with my dad,” said Mikail Jack. “We are making memories for a lifetime and helping each other out with school.”

The two can frequently be seen together at SOWELA Oakdale, and when asked if there’s a father-son rivalry in class, Nathan Jack laughs and shares, “I don’t compete with Mikail—he’s a way better welder than me.”

The SOWELA tie goes even further than father and sons. Nathan Jamar’s wife, Erica Jack, graduated from SOWELA’s Nursing program in May 2020.

“I love that I can quickly get into the workforce with an affordable education,” said Nathan Jamar. “I’m happy I’m able to be successful immediately, and my wife is successful thanks to her degree. Between me, my dad and my brother, SOWELA is accessible—no matter who you are or where you are in life, you can go to college and be successful.”

Providing accessible and affordable higher education to all learners is exactly what SOWELA is about and why the institution will celebrate Community College Week March 21-25, 2022. SOWELA is responsive to local employer needs and offers programs in high-wage, high-demand careers that empower residents to support their families and community.
