SOWELA Celebrates Student’s Success from Dual Enrollment to International Study During Community College Week

SOWELA Culinary Arts graduate David LeGros is taking his culinary ambitions to new heights—over 7,000 miles from home. After earning valuable experience and industry connections at SOWELA, LeGros is pursuing further studies in the prestigious Sol International Culinary Arts (SICA) program at Woosong University in Daejeon, South Korea.
LeGros credits SOWELA’s renowned Culinary Arts program with providing the foundation for success in the competitive food service industry. Originally introduced to SOWELA through dual enrollment while in high school, he was drawn to the College’s well-established culinary program.
“SOWELA gave me the chance to gain hands-on experience through incredible events like the Taste of SOWELA and the Louisiana Food and Wine Festival. These opportunities helped me develop professional skills and build lasting industry connections,” said LeGros. Additionally, as a member of SkillsUSA, LeGros competed at both the state and national levels in the restaurant service category, further sharpening his expertise.
A passion for international cuisine and cultural exploration fueled the decision to continue his culinary education abroad. At Woosong University, LeGros studies French-style cuisine while delving into Asian culinary traditions. His experience has been enriching and challenging, from adapting to a new environment to learning the Korean language to navigate daily life off campus better.
“Leaving home was difficult, but this is a stepping stone toward a fulfilling and rewarding career. Though I may be far from Southwest Louisiana, I carry the spirit of home with me,” LeGros shared.
Grateful for the support received from family, friends and faculty at SOWELA, LeGros acknowledges the impact of his time at the institution. “SOWELA truly helped shape my future, and I am so proud to be an alum. The education and opportunities I received have opened doors I never imagined possible.”
