Application Now Open for Louisiana’s “M.J. Foster Promise Program” Available to New and Current SOWELA Students

Eligible Students Can Receive Up to $3,200 in Financial Aid per Academic School Year

(Lake Charles, Louisiana – June 13, 2023)

Eligible new and current students at SOWELA Technical Community College can take advantage of Louisiana’s “M.J. Foster Promise Program,” a financial aid award given on a first-come, first-served basis. Funds from the program are available to students over three years to cover their tuition and fees. Qualifying students are eligible for a maximum of $3,200 per award year, which covers most tuition and fees, with a maximum lifetime benefit of $6,400. Students must be 21 years or older to qualify.

“This past year, over 75 students were able to benefit from the MJ Foster Promise Scholarship. Some of these students were able to attend SOWELA free of charge through this scholarship and other funding,” said Allison Dering, interim executive director of enrollment management and student affairs. “With the new MJ Foster Promise application opening for the Fall semester, funds will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. We encourage all students interested in attending SOWELA in an eligible program of study to apply now.”

Eligible programs include Aviation Maintenance, Medical Assistant, Chemical Laboratory Technology, Drafting and Design, HVAC training, Machine Tool Technology, Nursing (RN), Sterile Processing, Vehicle Maintenance, and more.

Interested individuals can find the “MJ Foster Promise Program” eligibility requirements and a complete list of qualifying SOWELA programs at our MJ Foster Promise page. For more information, call the One Stop Enrollment Office at (337) 421-6550 or email onestop@sowela.edu.

Named after former Louisiana Governor Mike J. Foster, the “M.J. Foster Promise Program” is a $10.5 million annual state fund that will provide financial support for students to earn credentials that align with high-demand jobs in the state’s growing industry sectors such as healthcare, construction, transportation and logistics. The program aims to cover community and technical college tuition for thousands of Louisianians.
