Welcome to SOWELA! We are looking forward to you becoming a SOWELA Flying Tiger!
During your first semester you will have an “Advising Hold” on your account before you can register for courses. The purpose of this hold is so we can answer any questions you have regarding your major/program of study, discuss course options with you, and develop an academic plan consistent with your goals. We are here to help!
Placement Testing Scores
If you are pursuing an Associate degree, or a major/diploma program that requires placement scores for entry, it is recommended that we have your placement test scores on file prior to your advising appointment. If you have taken the ACT, SAT, or ACCUPLACER test in the past 3 years, these scores can be reviewed for placement. You can also find out more information regarding scheduling for the ACCUPLACER (remotely or in our Testing Center) on our Testing Center page.
Immunization Requirements
Beginning in the Spring 2022 semester, new students are required to submit proof of immunization compliance or sign the Immunization Waiver for the COVID-19 vaccination. For any additional questions regarding immunization requirements or the waiver, please contact onestop@sowela.edu.
Academic Advising
Advisors can schedule students for in-person appointments. Our FAST Advisors at the Lake Charles campus are located in the Sycamore Student Center. Students who are going to attend the SOWELA instructional sites in Jennings or Oakdale may receive advising services at those sites. If you are not comfortable attending in person, feel free to request a remote appointment.
Visit our Academic Advising page for details on how to schedule an appointment.
New Student Orientation
All new, full-time students are expected to attend one of the orientation sessions. Orientation helps you acclimate to the campus and provides information about available student services. We would like to encourage students to be advised and have a class schedule prior to registering for their Orientation session. To view the Orientation schedule and register for a session, visit our Orientation page.
Visit our Academic Calendar page for important dates regarding registration, payment deadlines, and more.
