Textbook Lending Program
The Textbook Lending Program is a program designed through the Office of Student Support Services to assist students who are unable to purchase textbooks to begin their courses. With the assistance of Carl Perkins funds and a private grant, students can request assistance with borrowing at least one textbook from SOWELA's Library Services.

The deadline for applying for the program is always a week and a half prior to the start of the semester. Students are notified between that time period of their eligibility to participate in the program. Textbooks are loaned on a first come first serve basis. Students may be assisted after the deadline if the textbook(s) they require are still available. Students that apply are NOT GUARANTEED textbook assistance through the programs but are encouraged to apply.

The Carl Perkins Textbook Lending Program assists students classified as a special population. Carl Perkins defines special populations as follows:

  • Students with disabilities
  • Economically disadvantaged students, can be a Pell Grant recipient or unemployed
  • Students in nontraditional programs of study that lead to occupations or fields that have 25 percent or less of their gender employed within the occupation (e.g. Nursing (for men), Automotive (for women), Aviation (for women), etc.)
  • Single parents, including single pregnant women
  • Displaced homemakers which are students who have been dependent upon the income of another family member but are no longer supported by that income
  • Students with limited English proficiency

The HCD Textbook Lending Program assists first semester students with financial need in the following areas: (Aviation Maintenance Technology, Drafting and Design Technology, Industrial Electrician, Nursing, and Process Technology)
