Student Support My Story Advertisement
The story of our students’ success IS the SOWELA story. Stop any student on campus, and you’ll hear a story of determination, hard work, and a clear vision of what kind of job they want or how they plan to transfer to a four-year institution. Even though SOWELA’s tuition is a good bargain and affordable, the large percentage of our student population are working full-time or part-time jobs and making sacrifices to become well trained and skilled.
Your gifts to fund scholarships help students have opportunities to learn what they otherwise would not. Whether it’s for tuition, books or fees, even the smallest scholarship makes a difference in the life of an ambitious hardworking student.
The Chancellor’s Excellence Fund steps in where tuition and state funding fall short, ensuring that students continue to have exceptional learning experiences at SOWELA. The Excellence Fund supports the College’s greatest needs and is prudently managed to provide the greatest value when those needs arise.
Gifts to the Chancellor’s Excellence Fund can help support:
- Scholarships and other student support
- Faculty/student collaborative projects
- Professional and curriculum development initiatives for faculty
- Technology and modern learning aids
- Additional opportunities as designated by the Chancellor as essential to the College’s continued success and growth
In a time of rapid growth and expansion, the Chancellor and his leadership staff have shown wise use of the funds available and have exhibited excellent stewardship of the major gifts that have been bestowed on the College.
SOWELA has many opportunities available for individuals, families, and businesses that may be interested in naming opportunities at the College. The financial requirements for each opportunity vary, so it is best to speak with a college representative to understand the process. Our comprehensive naming policy is designed to help secure the College's on-going commitment to affordable, high-quality education for years to come. The policy stipulates guidelines for designation of college buildings, facilities, and specific areas on the main campus in Lake Charles or the new facility in Jennings.
Naming opportunities are available to honor individuals or entities that have donated financially to the Institution. Gifts that are not used in the construction of new facilities or campus revitalization will support the SOWELA Foundation in helping meet critical needs and fund scholarships for students.
Although donations of any amount will be accepted, donations less than $25,000 will be considered for tribute markers such as benches, study areas, and high visibility walkways, fountains, and other areas on campus. The following guidelines have been developed for new and existing campus facilities:
- New buildings: 50% of construction costs
- Existing unnamed buildings: Minimum contribution of $500,000
- High visibility areas such as a conference room, library, one stop shop student services center, veterans affairs, gym, dining hall: Contribution of $150,000 - $500,000 or greater depending on the area
- Classrooms and laboratories: Contribution of $25,000 - $150,000 or greater depending on the room
In those cases where facilities are named for people, such facilities should be named for distinguished individuals who are preeminent in their field of endeavor or have contributed meaningfully to the College. Any proposed name "shall bring honor and distinction to the College." After consultation with the Foundation Board, the College Chancellor will have final approval of all naming decisions.
