Am I familiar with and have access to email and Internet?
Email and Internet Access
• Sowela Technical Community College is committed to making education better meet the changing life styles of our growing society through Online Learning. Sowela is also committed to the student to have a successful learning experience. The following questions are written to assist you in assessing your basic skills and capabilities that are needed in order to be successful in an online course.
• Have you activated your Sowela student email account?
• Can you send and receive email messages with attachments?
• Email is one of the predominant means of communication, and, consequently, you must be able to use that application effectively.
• Is your Internet connection reliable?
• Can you access the Internet daily for at least one hour per session?
• Accessing your online course regularly is as important as attending your face-to-face class regularly. Traditional 3-credit-hour, face-to-face courses meet for roughly three hours each week with an additional 6 hours of out-of-the-classroom work for a total of 9 hours per week. You should be prepared to devote a minimum of 9 hours each week to your 3 credit-hour online course. Reliable internet connectivity is imperative to fulfill this commitment.
• Can you multi-task between your email application and a word processing application, such as Microsoft Word?
• Conclusion: If email is not a commonly used method of communication for you or if your internet connection is not reliable, thenyou may want to consider registering for traditional face-to-face course instead of an online course.
